Security awareness

Help people recognize relevant risks and follow usable protective processes.

The idea

Security awareness makes people familiar with risks, expectations, and reporting routes. Training builds practical skills beyond recognition. Effective programs reflect real roles and workflows, provide trusted verification methods, and avoid blame-based messages that suppress reporting. Measure whether people can take the right action, not only whether they completed a video. Technical and process controls should support the behavior you expect.

In practice

Finance staff practice verifying a payment-detail change through an independent callback and know whom to contact when a request seems suspicious.

A common misunderstanding

Awareness cannot compensate for a process that rewards bypassing checks under pressure.

What makes reporting safer and more effective?

Think it through: A clear channel, timely support, and a culture that welcomes early reports, including mistakes.

Make the expected action possible

A fictional finance team receives urgent requests to change supplier bank details. Telling staff to 'be careful' is vague. A useful program explains how to verify the request through an independently obtained contact, who can approve a change, and where to report uncertainty. The business process should give staff time and authority to follow those steps.

Role-specific practice is more meaningful than identical advice for everyone. Finance staff handle payment changes, developers handle secrets and dependencies, and support staff handle account recovery. Each group needs examples that reflect its actual decisions. Shared principles remain useful, but the practical action should be recognizable in daily work.

Reporting culture affects detection. If people expect blame for clicking a suspicious link, they may delay reporting a mistake. A prompt report can give responders a chance to revoke a session or stop a payment. Communicate how reports are handled and thank people for useful information without promising that every incident is harmless.

Evaluate behavior with a tabletop scenario

Give the finance team a fictional request containing plausible company details and urgency. Ask participants to explain their verification route and escalation choice. Do not use real supplier account details or surprise staff with a harmful transaction. Observe where the process is confusing or unavailable.

Measure outcomes that support improvement: whether people know the reporting route, whether verification is independent, and whether the team can complete the workflow without bypassing controls. Completion percentages alone say little about those abilities. Review the program when systems or responsibilities change. Awareness is most useful when technical safeguards and business procedures support the behavior being taught, making the safer action a practical part of normal work.
